Frosted vanilla cupcakes with blazin’ blue colors.
A half dozen cupcakes were leftover from my last cupcake adventure and had to be put to use and soon. All you need some cupcakes, frosting, and a bit of fruit leather.
Blue fruit leather (fruit roll-up)
Blue food coloring paste
Brown food coloring paste
Black food coloring paste
Once your cupcakes are ready and cooled, warm up 1/2 cup of white frosting in the microwave for about 10 seconds, or until it softens. Add a squirt of blue food coloring. You’ll want the blue to be deeper than the blue fruit leather.
Pour the warm frosting into a ziplock bag and snip a corner off the edge.
Draw the outline of the blue helmet and color in. Frost all the cupcakes with the blue frosting. You’ll want to save about two tablespoon of this frosting, so don’t throw the bag away quite yet.
Next, warm up another 1/2 of frosting and add a touch – just a touch! – of brown food coloring. Repeat the bagging process and fill in the rest of the cupcake with this frosting.
Just a couple more rounds with the frosting and the microwave – warm up 1/4 cup of white frosting for the eyes, and then do the the same with about 4 tablespoons of white frosting. Add a squirt of black food paste and mix. Finish the eyes with the color and add the mouth. A toothpick is helpful for nudging the color into the proper shape.
Take the blue fruit leather and cut into small strips. Taking about an inch of the fruit leather, cut off two small pieces. These three pieces will make the top and side pieces of the helmet.
Since the blue frosting on the cupcake will have hardened by now, take the pieces of fruit leather and add a bit of frosting to the back. Apply to cupcake.
The toppings are enough for half a dozen Megaman cupcakes.
