Frosted vanilla cake with a design from a screenshot of Legend of Zelda.
The Legend of Zelda theme is back this week with a cake! The 8-bit graphics of the game and its buttery colored background makes a screenshot easily transferable to a cake.
Ingredients for cake:
3 cups cake flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups (three sticks) butter
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 eggs
Ingredients for frosting:
1 cup butter
2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Any needed decorations (gels, candies, etc.)
Heat oven to 350°F!
Prepare the 13″x9″ cake pan by rubbing the inside down with shortening. Dust the pan with flour, then flip the pan over to get rid of any excess.

Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

In a large bowl, blend the butter and sugar together until mixture is fluffy.

Add the flour mixture along with the eggs, milk, and vanilla. Blend together and then mix for another two minutes.

Pour the cake mixture into a rectangular cake pan.

Pop into the oven for 25-30 minutes. The cake is done when a toothpick that’s poked in the middle of the cake comes out clean.

Once done, pull the cake from the oven and allow to sit for 10-15 minutes. Once the cake has cooled a bit, carefully flip the cake over a wire rack or tin foil. Give a couple of pats to loosen the cake from the pan. Gently flip the cake upright.

If the cake is being stubborn and not coming out of the pan, run a knife around the edges of the pan. If the cake has cooled too much, you can turn on an oven burner and set the cake pan on top. This will heat the bottom of the cake pan to help loosen it.
Allow the cake to fully cool, which will take an hour or two.
For the frosting, beat together the softened butter, sugar, and vanilla.

To create the background Zelda color, add a squirt of yellow food coloring.

Frost the cake with the colored frosting. One of those fancy cake froster knives makes things worlds easier.

Decorate with whatever gels and candies are needed to suit the screenshot of your fancy.
I went with the below screenshot for a template. There’s a bunch pictures more over at Moby Games.

Green M&Ms worked well for the bushes.

A dab of green gel was used to hold the M&Ms in place.

Blue gel and blue sprinkles were used for the pond.
Red, green, and yellow decorator’s gel along with some sprinkles created the rest of the screenshot.

Makes one awfully big cake.
Dang, I was really hoping you’d try to do something cute like a fondant Zora, but I see no Zora love here! Also, is there any chance you’d do something with a Waffle as the base food? I really like waffles, and would love to see your delicious take on them!
Wow! that is so cool, i love the idea of M&Ms for the bushes! rock on!

I’m totally doing this for my zelda 25th anniversary party!
