The large heart and star cookie cutters.

Roll out your cookie dough to about 1/4″ thickness. You’ll want the cookies pretty thick.
Use the heart and star cookie cutters to cut out the cookies. Cut off two points of the star cookie so it that it fits with the bottom of the heart. Push and slightly mush the two cookie parts together.

Cookies ready to be baked.

Bake cookies for 6-8 minutes.
Allow the cookies to cool.
While the cookies are cooling, it’s time to put the royal icing together! Mix together the powdered sugar, meringue powder, and three tablespoons of warm water until the mixture is thick and glossy. Add a touch more warm water if the mixture is too thick. You’ll want a strand of icing to sit on top of the surface for a few seconds.
Scoop 3/4th of the icing into a bowl and add black food coloring. Once the color has been fully incorporated, scoop the icing into a plastic, sealable bag. The rest of the icing should be dyed a nice bright red. Scoop up the red icing into another plastic bag and seal.
Take the black royal icing bag and cut off the end of the bag. Pick out a cookie and outline the cookie in black icing. Fill in the icing outline.

Iced cookies.

Allow the cookies to sit for several hours, overnight if you can. Royal icing takes a rather long time to dry.
Once the black royal icing has set, take the red icing bag and snip off the end. Outline the cookie with the red icing.
