M&Ms cookies based on Manny Calavera from Grim Fandango.
A couple of weekends ago I made a massive amount of sugar cookie dough to make dozens of pacman and ghost cookies for an event. (The event in particular was the Grand Opening of the Computer and Video Game Archive. How awesome of a library is that?) Even with every kitchen counter covered with baked cookies, I had dough left over. This dough keeps well and was used for these Grim Fandango cookies.
Grim Fandango is an adventure computer game released in 1998 and primarily written by the brilliant Tim Schafer. The controls are a little awkward, but the rest of the game makes up for it. The characters, music, and atmosphere are expertly done.
These cookies are based off the main character Manny Calavera, a travel agent in the Land of the Dead.

The guitar hero cookies list both the sugar cookie and royal icing recipes, but you can use whatever recipes suit your fancy.
Once you have the dough all set, roll out to about 1/4 inch. Cut out a rectangle that has 1.5 inches width and 3 inches height.
Place two brown M&Ms so the top of the M&M is in the middle of the cookie. Manny has a pointy head, so trim off the top of the cookie. If it looks a little too pointy, don’t worry! The baking process will round everything out.
Once the sugar cookies have cooled you can put together the royal icing. You’ll want it pretty thick, so the royal icing recipe in the guitar hero cookies will work just peachy. If you’re using your own royal icing recipe, just add a bit more powdered sugar than normal.
Scoop the icing into a plastic bag, seal, and snip off the tip.
Cover the cookie with white royal icing, avoiding the eyes.
It’ll take about 10 minutes for the cookie to harden. Add a few drops of the black coloring paste to white royal icing so it’s a nice deep black.
For the lines above the eyes, add three dots of black royal icing. Quickly use a toothpick to draw the lines in the direction of the arrows in the picture below.
You can leave the eyes alone if you’d like, but the M&Ms like to crack while baking, so I added royal icing to mine.
Add the triangle nose and mouth with black icing to finish your Manny!
