Gone Home – Good Ol’ Christmas Duck Steam Card

gonehomeducktitleSugar cookies with royal icing, painted with food coloring.

The Good Ol’ Christmas Duck is one of the first items you interact with in the game Gone Home, and it gets own commentary blurb in commentary mode. One the Steam Cards I received from buying the game was the Good Ol’ Christmas Duck Steam Card, so I decided to base a sugar cookie design off of it. Plus the ducky is just darn cute.

Here’s how it all went down.

Tube of sugar cookie dough
~1/8 cup flour for dusting
Yellow and/or Orange food coloring
Pink food coloring
Green food coloring
Blue food coloring
Purple food coloring
Red food coloring

For the royal icing:
4 cups powdered sugar
3 tablespoons meringue powder
~1/4 cup water

Sealable plastic bag
Paint Brushes
Paint palette
Ruler (optional)

Preheat oven to 350°F!

Dust down some flour and roll out the dough so it’s about 1/4″ thick. Cut into rectangles about 3″ x 4.5″. I was eyeballing this, but if you’re going for something more precise, a ruler would be helpful here.

gonehomeduck01Place the cookies on a cookie sheet and bake for 6-8 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.

Allow the cookies to cool.

While the cookies are a’ coolin’, you can put together the royal icing. Mix the powdered sugar, meringue powder, and add a couple of tablespoons of water. If the mixture is too thick, add another tablespoon of water. You want the mixture thick enough so a drop of icing will stay on the surface for a few moments before blending back in.

Pour the icing into a sealable plastic bag. Seal and snip off the corner of the bag.

gonehomeduck02Using a pint glass is an easy way to get the icing into the bag with minimal mess.

Ice the cookies, allowing some space around the edge of the cookie.

gonehomeduck04Allow the royal icing to harden overnight.

When you’re ready to paint, get the brushes, a cup of water to clean your brush, the paint palette, and brushes. I used two sizes of brushes, one small and one very small.

Dip the brush into the container of food coloring, dip into the paint palette to add water / dilute if needed, and then paint your cookie. I found it helpful to have a picture of the Good Ol’ Christmas Duck for reference.

gonehomeduck07Using the very small brush to outline the duck.

It’s similar to painting with watercolors. Pretty fun!
