Peanut butter cookie chapeaus for a Black Mage donut noggin.
The Black Mage has been done before on this site, but this time we’re going for a cookie version. I’ve heard these cookies called “Peanut Butter Blossoms,” “Witch Hats,” and “Cyclops Cookies.” Whatever you fancy to call the cookies, they will be donned atop a chocolate donut hole.
1 3/4 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar, plus about 1/2 cup to roll dough in
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup peanut butter (I like extra crunchy!)
2 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 pkg. Hershey’s Kisses
Chocolate donut holes
Tiny bit of frosting (any flavor)
A note about the Hershey’s Kisses: if you decide to use the dark truffle filled Hershey Kisses, they will flatten out when cooling. Regular Hershey Kisses or the kind with nuts (almond Kisses in particular are yummy) shouldn’t sink on you so you can get the proper hat shape.
Preheat oven to 350°F!
Soften the butter and mix in the sugar and brown sugar.
After the mixture’s looking nice and fluffy, mix in the egg, milk, and vanilla extract.
Add in the peanut butter and blend.
Blend in the flour, baking soda, and salt. It’ll be a pretty thick dough.
Form the dough into one inch balls and roll in sugar.
Set the balls on a cookie sheet and smoosh down with a fork.
Bake for about 10 minutes, or until the cookies edges begin to turn golden brown.
While they’re baking, unwrap the Hershey’s Kisses.
Transfer the cookies from cookie sheet to a cooling rack. Don’t worry if they cookies seem a bit soft. Quickly push a Hershey Kiss to the top of every cookie. Allow the cookies to set for a couple of hours.
The reason the cooldown takes so long is because the warm cookie will soften up the Hershey Kisses. The chocolate will look quite shiny while this is going on. If you touch the Kisses before the chocolate hardens, chocolate will get everywhere!
For the head of the Black Mage, take a chocolate donut hole and trim off the bottom for stability, and the top to hold the cookie hat.
For the eyes, Take two yellow M&Ms and glue to the donut hole with a dab of frosting.
Add the cookie hat.
Little Black Mages! Makes enough for two and a half dozen really darn good cookies.
