The representation of perks and stats in Fallout as a sugar cookie with royal icing.
A friendly fellow who goes by the name “PT” pointed out some tasty Vault Boy cookies over at the Bethesda blog. Vault Boy is a great idea; it’s perfect for the gingerbread cookie cutter!
I’d been calling these guys “pip boys,” but as it turns out, that’s not the proper term. So says the Fallout Wiki –
…While the name of the Vault-Tec mascot (round ears, blond hair, blue and yellow Vault jumpsuit) is not present in the actual original games, according to Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain, he was always referred to as Vault Boy or Fallout Boy, not Pip-Boy (although neither of these names actually appears in-game, and the Fallout manual calls him “Vault-Man”).
So Vault Boy it is!
Sugar cookie dough
Sky blue, brown, yellow, and black food coloring
Black food marker
Ingredients for Royal Icing (for a dozen cookies):
4 cups powdered sugar
3 tablespoons meringue powder
Several tablespoons warm water (4-6)
Roll out your cookie dough to about 1/4″ thickness. Use a gingerbread man cookie cutter to cut out the cookies and place on a cookie sheet.
To give the thumbs-up pose, curl one arm down on the hip, the other in the air, like so:
Bake cookies for 6-8 minutes, or until golden brown.
Allow the cookies to cool.
Royal icing time! Mix together the powdered sugar, meringue powder, and four tablespoons of warm water until the mixture is thick and glossy. Add more warm water if the mixture is too thick. You’ll want it thick enough so when you lift your spoon and let the icing drip back into the bowl, the strand of icing will stay on the surface for a few seconds.
Take 1/2 of the royal icing and add the blue food coloring. Pour into a sealable plastic bag and snip the tip of the corner off.
Take a cookie and draw the outline of a jumpsuit with the bag of icing. Fill in the outline. Repeat for all cookies.
Take another 1/4 of the remaining of the royal icing and add the brown food coloring. Scoop into another plastic bag and snip the corner off. Draw on the booties and fill.
Take 1/2 of the remaining icing and dip a toothpick into the brown food coloring, then add to the white icing. You want the white icing to have a little color, but not too much.
Draw the head and hands, then fill.
Allow the cookies to set overnight for the royal icing to harden. Before packing everything away, take the rest of the royal icing, add yellow food coloring, then scoop into a bag. We’ll use this coloring for tomorrow.
The next day, draw the Vault Boy face onto the cookie. Don’t use a lot of force in case the royal icing is still a little soft. I like to do a practice run on a slice of paper before getting to the cookies.
With a light hand, draw on the faces on the cookies.
Next, snip a corner of the yellow royal icing bag, and draw on the hair. Vault Boy has a tuft on one side, but it’s a little tricky to pull off with royal icing.
Finally, draw on the yellow collar and belt.
Allow the cookies to set for a couple of hours. Makes 8-9 large cookies.
