Chocolate Cherry Bob-omb Bombs

1 jar maraschino cherries
1 box of chocolate cake mix
1 cup chocolate frosting
Small pretzels
White sprinkles
Yellow M&Ms
Black food coloring
Cooking spray


Waxed paper
Baking sheet
Any sized cake pan(s)

Prepare your box of chocolate cake mix as directed on the box. Spray your cake pan(s) with cooking spray and pour the mix into the pan(s). I used two 9″ cake pans, but any size works.

Bake the cake and allow to cool.

While the cake is cooling, drain the maraschino cherries and place them a paper towel. You’ll only want the cherries that still have stems.


Once the cake has cooled, crumble the cake into a bowl.


Add 1/4 cup of the chocolate frosting and mix.

Roll the mixture into balls and set on a sheet of waxed paper on a baking sheet.


Smoosh your thumb into a chocolate ball.


Place a cherry into the middle of the smooshed cake ball.


Fold the cake back over the cherry so it’s completely covered.


Repeat for all cake balls.


Place into the freezer for 10-15 minutes.

Take the rest of the chocolate frosting  3/4 cup  and microwave for 30 seconds in a mug.

Add a few drops of the black food coloring to the melted frosting and mix.


Take the cake balls out of the freezer. Holding the stem, fully submerge the cake ball into the mug of frosting. Gently shake off any excess frosting and then place the cake ball onto waxed paper.

Another option for the shell is to use melted chocolate instead of frosting, which would help with the stickiness, but you do have to temper the chocolate. Candy melts are another option, but you’ll want to your cake balls to be super smooth for that (which mine were not.)


Repeat for all cake balls. Pop them back in the freezer for another 10-15 minutes.


Take two white sprinkles and add them for eyes. I sorted through my sprinkles and just picked the white ones out.

Add two yellow M&Ms to the bottom of the cake ball for feet, and add the small pretzels for the wind-up bit on the back.

Repeat for all cake balls.

Refrigerate until ready to eat. Bring to room temperature before serving. They are a bit sticky, but holding the stem makes for easy transport directly into the mouth.
